The MAGA Default Crisis

The MAGA majority is promising to hold the economy hostage.

In exchange for doing the bare minimum — pay the government's bills — MAGA Republicans want Democrats to agree to cut critical programs like Social Security and Medicare. House Democrats must send a message loud and clear: American's lives and livelihoods are not bargaining chips.

Kevin McCarthy and the extremists in the House Freedom Caucus have made it no secret that they plan to put our economy, jobs, and health at risk to pursue their pet political projects by cutting programs Americans rely on.

President Biden has stood strong, calling out the GOP as bad-faith hostage-takers, and demanding Congress fulfill its obligation to avoid a default crisis without strings attached. We need every Democrat in the house to do the same and unite with President Biden.

Representatives Boyle, Kuster, and Jayapal are asking their Democratic colleagues to sign a letter and make a commitment to the American people to oppose the MAGA Default Crisis, and refuse any cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or other programs families rely on.

For MAGA Republicans, the chaos is the point.

America has paid all of its bills on time since 1789, we can not let MAGA Republicans lead the U.S. to financial catastrophe and pull the rug out from underneath working people. Instead of working to strengthen our economy and close tax loopholes that favor the ultra-wealthy, MAGA Republicans are trying to cause economic uncertainty and volatility.

The MAGA default crisis means delays or cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and 401(k)s, stripping away retirement from millions who have worked hard and have earned it. It means driving up interest rates, making cars loans, mortgages, and credit cards more expensive for families. It would also cause a recession, costing our country seven million jobs and doubling the unemployment rate. Of course, working families would bear the brunt of the GOP’s irresponsible behavior — the ultra-wealthy and big corporations will get along just fine.

Mike Lee

Utah

“One thing that you probably haven’t ever heard from a politician: it will be my objective to phase out Social Security. To pull it up by the roots, and get rid of it.”

When Lee initially ran for Senate, he called for the complete elimination of Social Security.

Rick Scott

Florida

"If a law is worth keeping, Congress can pass it again"

In 2022, Scott proposed a "Rescue America" plan that would sunset Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, after five years.

Ron Johnson

Wisconsin

“I’ve been saying for as long as I’ve been here that we should transfer everything, put everything on budget so we have to consider it if every year."

Johnson has suggested that Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid would need to be annually renewed.

MAGA Republicans On the Record

While Republicans keep going on TV to  deny their plan is to slash benefits or use our entire economy as a bargaining chip, they can’t help but let the truth come out - repeatedly. Senator Ron Johnson from Wisconsin called Social Security a “legal Ponzi scheme.” Senator Rick Scott from Florida proposed sunsetting Social Security and Medicare every five years, throwing seniors into a constant state of financial limbo.

Former Vice President Mike Pence just recently put cuts to Social Security and Medicare on the table, including letting Wall Street gamble with our Social Security savings. And just last year, a group of 160 House Republicans proposed raising the retirement age for Social Security to 70. And remember, the GOP wants to have this both ways - because if they drive us into a default crisis, cuts to these programs could happen automatically. It’s a cruel game and our families and communities would be on the losing team.

Thank your members of Congress for coming together to protect Medicare and Social Security.
